One of the fun parts of living abroad is learning new turns of phrase that don’t exist back home. I noticed there is a type of loaf of bread sold at the grocery store called a bloomer, and cuter yet, one called an oaty bloomer. According to the interwebs, a bloomer is a fluffy loaf with rounded ends. In the shops, its basically half a round loaf of sliced bread in a bag.

PDXPOET wants wine and often.
Back home, we had our go-to “Emergency Wine” Barefoot Pinot Grigio in the double bottles. Here in Kew Gardens, where we have to carry whatever we buy home on our backs, a more refined, standard bottle is more likely to get in the basket. And while I have seen Barefoot here, I thought to myself, the whole point of this adventure is to try new things.
So in that…

A Cure for ADHD
Take downy fur of spiny bat
the whiskers of a feral cat
the citron-crest of cockatoos
the pouch from seven kangaroos
the kookaburra’s throaty laugh
and spots that fell from a giraffe:
Quick, grind inside a rooster’s crop
and serve upon a mutton chop,
and if the child refuse to learn
pluck out his heart and set to burn.
(I titled this poem “A Cure for ADHD,” probably because I’m working with a lot of kids who have been diagnosed as experiencing ADHD, but I feel I could have substituted any childhood problem—and in my own case, I’m thinking in particular of depression or just sadness in general, or the feeling of being somehow different from everyone else or not conforming to charts, measures, or standards.)

Okay everyone—it’s official! I’ve decided to run a little auction here to raise money for books and tuition. As most of you know, I am currently enrolled in a masters program at Portland State University to become a certified teacher in language and fine arts with a special certification to teach special education. The pieces I plan to list in the auction are small and affordable (For example, I started the bidding on today’s piece at $5.00). I tend to give my art away, usually, but I thought this might be a fun way to raise some book money while getting some quirky and offbeat pieces out into the world. The auction will last 31 days, so if you don’t see something you like, just wait a bit. The first auction starts at 12:00 a.m. PST and lasts till Monday at 12:00 a.m. Tomorrow, I will post pics of some of the items I plan to auction, so you will get a preview!
